ABSTRACT

The manufacturing process involved ’stuffing’ microchips onto the boards. This chapter focuses on the introduction of high performance workgroups within the Micro 11 group of the product manufacturing business at Ayr. The group began life as a project team geared towards the acquisition of new product manufacturing business to the Ayr plant in 1982. The initial emphasis of the group was to design a production system which would manufacture Digital’s personal computer range. The modules manufacturing process was organized along similar lines to the 11-23 LCP and 11-73 Orion sections and manufactured the main central processor boards for those sections. The plant Manufacturing Plan for the KDJ 11 module, written in February 1985, explained the goals and organization of the manufacturing process in the following terms: The major goals of the manufacturing plan are to establish a low-cost, flexible KDJ 11 manufacturing process where quality and customer assurance takes main priority.
