ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the contributors have identified some of the most effective strategies and best practices in terms of how to support students’ use of teaching strategies. The term “strategy” is a broad term that can refer to any cognitive or noncognitive approach that students utilize while working on academic tasks. The chapter identifies some of the most effective strategies and best practices in terms of how to support students’ use of those strategies. Metacognitive strategies include a wide range of strategies that learners can use in order to work on academic tasks effectively. The use of metacognitive strategies is related positively to academic achievement, although these relations vary somewhat by subject area and grade in school. One of the most important takeaway messages is that in order to positively affect achievement, the strategies must be implemented by teachers with fidelity and according to research-based recommendations. If they are implemented in a piecemeal manner, students are unlikely to benefit.
