ABSTRACT

While designers and choreographers have varying ideas about the aesthetics of costumes and how best to approach the design process, they are surprisingly aligned when it comes to judging a success. Good designs become an essential part of the work. A successful design comes from a collaboration where all the artists involved feel like they can explore, so the product becomes more than the sum of its parts. While most artists do not actively seek to develop a style, over time their body of work shows their strengths and their taste. Choreographers are used to exploring alongside dancers, whether they actually use the dancers as co-creators, or just to try out movement phrases in the studio. Both designers and choreographers will be well served if they periodically focus on and improve their ability to be creative.
