ABSTRACT

The level of control a choreographer exerts can range in intensity from the choreographer functioning as an "auteur," having a total vision of the piece, to a softer influence where they specify guiding principles and ideas for the team to refine as they create designs or compose. Choreographers are usually very visual people, and their conception of a dance may include thinking how a dancer moves in and out of a pool of light, a specific pair of flowing pants, or a reflective, metallic color palette. When Trey McIntyre stated his costume idea for his piece entitled Big Ones, set to the music of Amy Winehouse, Reid Bartelme explained that he and his co-designer, Harriet Jung, took the idea to make the dancers into superhero chocolate bunnies in stride. McIntyre approaches each dance he creates as a set of puzzles to figure out.
