ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways that both choreographers and designers spark their own creation processes, and the initial stages of their collaborative dialog that will continue through the completion of the work. Choreographer Nicole Haskins pointed out that, just like in a scientific investigation, artists should begin a collaboration without a set outcome in mind. The work of choreographer Nicole Haskins is grounded in traditional ballet, with the women in pointe shoes. Jack Ferver is a choreographer who works in a theatrical style, but does not like to be defined by the term dance theater, nor performance art. In collaboration with visual artist Marc Swanson, Ferver created a work staged in an art gallery, its set more like an installation than typical scenery.
