ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book explores the system of schooling, its inequities, and search for equity and focuses on the insidious reality of white privilege and its effect on bias. Equity and equality are often used synonymously, but they are far from the same thing. The chapter argues that how school counselors can be agents of change in their school and interrupt racism when they see it. Racism is about systems that marginalize people of color and it's a systemic issue. Because of this, racism is a force only acted upon people of color and "reverse racism" cannot exist. The chapter explores how the systems of our society were created to privilege white people and the culture of white people and discusses how white privilege and racism is not the same as prejudice.
