ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 examines the start to Liber Secundus and the Red One episode. This is used to demonstrate the nature of how figures of the unconscious or split-off parts of the psyche behave. Included is an in-depth analysis of the tramp episode from ‘One of the Lowly’ in which Jung meets a convict and after which sees the tramp die in his harms. The episode is seminal in that it raises questions as to whether the tramp is a figure of Jung’s unconscious or is dead. Details of both the tramp and the nature of their conversation suggest the possibility that the unconscious can host figures that might be both and perhaps simultaneously. A discussion on if Jung believed in reincarnation is included here.
