ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 discusses the Septem Sermones: their structure, sequence and significance for the dead. Jung as an incarnate and Philemon as the teacher of the dead present the Sermones so that the dead can learn about their new existence in the world of boundless unconsciousness. Each sermon addresses ever-narrower perspectives in relation to the dead immersed in an unconscious with no boundaries to that of incarnate man. The Sermones give the dead an opportunity to think about their new condition and to compare their discarnate reality with their previous incarnate one. The Sermones serve as teachings for the dead themselves not for the living. Philemon after each sermon touches the ground and in a climactic gesture, steps off the wheel of rebirth.
