ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 analyses Jung’s first active imagination and the themes of rebirth and death. Jung began the experiment by inverting his focus and feeling his conscious awareness drop, using a cave as a visual prompt to examine material lying just under the threshold of consciousness. He felt this was successful and thought about the symbols contained in the scene. A discussion about blood as a libido symbol, mummification and serpents all contribute to an understanding of Jung’s process of exploration as well as looking at how this first experience anticipated his Red Book material.
