This chapter has been written not only for those who have made the decision to separate, but also for those who want to gain a greater understanding of what divorce might look and feel like. Based on the Relate Guide, How to Have a Healthy Divorce, readers are guided through a five-step plan to help them have the healthiest divorce possible, namely accepting the reality of the situation, managing emotions, assessing strengths, skills and support opportunities, considering emotional and practical challenges and developing an action plan. Divorce and separation is never an easy option and it marks a significant turning point in people’s lives, but if it’s managed in a healthy way, it can be a stepping stone to a better future – even if the decision was an unwanted one.
