ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses several movies, with illustrations, to examine a number of choices that are fairly typical in the early stages of digital media design. Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated. Where design professionals like Paul Rand are concerned with breaking through the noise of mass-market expectations to succeed in the highly competitive world of advertising or contemporary art, but they can still lead to profoundly powerful communication. Another important design concept that Robert Kershaw’s story immediately engages is the concept of the frame – the horizontal rectangle of a video screen. As the story progresses, Rob uses the screen space again when he presents the second image around which the story revolves.
