ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors begin with the lens of their particular viewpoint on the distribution of digital stories; they also briefly address the larger issues of ethics in group process and the politics of social change engagement as a whole. The digital moment changed everything. Suddenly prices for the toolset for video production dropped dramatically, and with the coming of the Web, people had ever-expanding options for distribution. Even if one never becomes a media facilitator or producer of community-based projects, becoming reasonably well-versed in the ethics of engagement seems a critical part of professional project management. Story Center was founded out of the legacy of anti-colonial, liberationist perspectives that carried a critique of power and the numerous ways rank is unconsciously expressed in engagements between classes, races, and genders. No singular rulebook for engagement can cover the countless cases in the real-world practice of professionals.
