ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, one of the largest expansions of digital storytelling in the United States has been as a means of community-based public health communication. In particular, a number of projects have emerged from the Native American communities. Researchers, advocates, educators, and local organizers have been looking at ways to engage community members in improving their health, and in working to overcome the chronic health disparities between Native Americans and the larger culture. Laura Revels began her work in digital storytelling in Alaska and other Native communities in 2009, and has built an active practice in the public health education field. I spoke with her about her experiences and the many lessons we can draw for the field of community-based health.
