ABSTRACT
As practitioners of a particular style of digital storytelling, the authors find it useful to define practices by creating a taxonomy based on three separate spectrums. The first is based on an approach to collaboration between facilitator and storyteller. The second explores the role of literary voice and the style that grows out of it. And the third spectrum is based on the form the stories take. What the authors recognize in the more refined practices is a shared commitment to ethical engagement and political empowerment. They also share with digital storytelling, PhotoVoice, and other community-based perspectives on media work an implicit sense of social and political agency in approaches to subjects and issues in the lives of the storytellers and the communities to which they belong. The storytellers receive a copy of their story, and the recordings become part of a permanent collection at the Library of Congress.
