ABSTRACT
This chapter explores basic steps in a digital storytelling project – methods that can be adapted to many different kinds of assignments. The best digital stories are almost always made by the students who are having the most fun with the process – whether they are writing about subjects they've loved forever or whether they are writing about subjects they're pondering or researching for the first time. Being an interesting storyteller is more of a life choice than a skill. Some people are natural performers. But they still need a good story to tell. Digital storytelling begins with a story circle, an experience that's often compared to sitting around a campfire, sharing stories, learning surprising new things about people by simply taking time to listen deeply as they recount an episode from their life. Another highly social dimension of the digital storytelling process is the makerspace that can arise as everyone begins assembling their voices and visuals into a video.
