ABSTRACT

My concern in this paper is threefold: first, to elucidate what have struck me as some of the important features of English character and society; second, to outline some aspects of Indian character; and third, to explore the inner tensions and anxieties of an Indian when he finds himself living in England. By its very nature such an enterprise is fraught with dangers and difficulties, and therefore some clarifying remarks concerning its nature and limits will not be inappropriate.
