ABSTRACT

The relation of husband and wife, not as a relation of subjection and of rule, but as the equal sharing of a great responsibility and a great joy, is fundamental to Christian civilisation. The home with its two co-equal heads is the divine type towards even among the lower creatures a continual striving and approach. The family relation is sacred; and men and women who, having taken in their charge a little group of children, can dissolve their home, break up the nest, scatter the family, for any caprice of their own; men and women who, even should they find themselves “incompatible,” would not for those children’s sake school themselves into compatibility, desecrate the relation of father and mother. No law of God seems to be more plainly written in the nature of things than that which lies at the basis of Western and Christian society that a man shall be the husband of one wife.
