ABSTRACT

The slave-trade, which had been so wonderfully made to provide the missionary, was made to provide his station also. The natives of the Yoruba country, which was Samuel Crowther’s native land, used formerly to live in scattered villages. Finding that they were unable to resist the attacks of the neighbouring tribes, who were constantly burning their villages, and carrying off the inhabitants to sell them as slaves by the Egba tribe of Yorubas, to collect together, and form a large city for mutual protection. To this they gave the name of Abbeokuta, or Under-stone. It contains from 50,000 to 70,000 inhabitants.
