ABSTRACT

Experimental architecture is introduced as a research practice capable of developing alternative architectural paradigms by redefining the materials, tools and limits of the field. Experimental architecture proposes an alternative portfolio of tools for the production of architectural spaces that includes ecological apparatuses such as dynamic droplets. While experimental architecture has been pejoratively referred to as “paper architecture” – designing utopian, dystopian or fantasy projects that are not meant to be built – a twenty-first century experimental architecture has gained new relevance. Experimental architecture emerged in a similar cultural milieu as the non-scientific explorations, sharing their notions of empowerment, engagement with inventive use of technology and overturning expectations of formal practice. Experimental architecture is a visionary branch of architecture and form of research practice. Monstering is implicit in radical architectural change. Monstering provided a toolset that empowered participants to set their own agendas by sorting, ordering and valuing the world in concordance with their ethics.
