ABSTRACT

Cartoons, outlines, rough drafts, and first sketches, in which artists, fired with inspiration, embodied their original conceptions, all of these preparatory works have long been relegated to almost inaccessible corners of museums. The study of these important works of art enables us to grasp from their rough and unfinished state the activities and procedures whose full development creates perfect works. Rudimentary art throws light upon highly developed art, as the study of abnormal psychology enables us to understand that of the healthy and well-balanced. The same can be said, although true in a lesser degree, of the archaic works found in the beginnings of the various cycles comprising the history of art. Numerous factors contribute to its formation, some coming from without and others from the psychic powers of the artist.
