ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how engaging employees is seen as one of the key sustainability challenges. It considers two angles to using the 80/20 Rule in employee engagement. These include what works: stripping out the 80 percent of ineffective engagement activity and focusing on the 20 percent of elements which deliver significant results. And another angle is 80/20 mentality: creating a culture where step changes are prized and 'box-ticking' is seen as a bad thing. The chapter observes through trial and error that the most effective approaches to engaging employees in sustainability involved aligning the approach to the prevailing culture in the organization, rather than trying to change the culture wholesale. In Green Jujitsu, the chapter focuses on people's strengths, habits and interests rather than trying to correct perceived weaknesses. The only way to do sustainability properly is a proper allocation of responsibility to those with authority.
