ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at strategic approaches to embed 80/20 thinking on sustainability into the organization. Many organizations set incremental targets for sustainability, such as 'people will reduce carbon footprint by 2 percent year on year'. This focuses effort and attention on the 20 percent of 'quick wins' rather than the 80 percent of the impact. To use the 80/20 Rule, it needs to be embedded deep into the organization’s strategy. A further step beyond the 'sustainability by innovation' approach is to hitch the future of the business to the sustainability bandwagon. Obviously a strategy is high risk as it involves innovative business models and developing new supply chains. The creating shared value concept emerged in 2011, the brainchild of business gurus Michael Porter and Mark Kramer. They believe that corporate social responsibility is too narrow in scope to bring step improvements to social and environmental issues in the economy.
