ABSTRACT

THE GROWTH IN LEGISLATION covering procurement and supply chains is increasing. There is also a more acute awareness by business with global supply chains that the operational, financial and reputational risk of sourcing their products and services needs to be properly managed through their purchasing decisions. Both the public and the private sector are going to have to revisit how they procure their services and products. There is a growing need to train procurement professionals to understand the social and environmental aspects that can impact on their tenders and contracts. There also appears to be a trend for organisations to share their procurement practices more broadly. Increased transparency in reporting and advertising will contribute to this trend. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to engage those organisations that have not or are not willing to embrace the organisational shifts that will need to be made. Only then will sustainable procurement practices become more mainstream and better integrated into business decision-making processes.
