ABSTRACT

A key driver for implementing a sustainable procurement policy and procedures is organisations being concerned about supply chain risks coming to fruition; whether legal, reputational or operational in nature. A sustainable procurement policy can also be a means by which to engage suppliers and develop better, more strategic relationships. Another key benefit of adopting a sustainable procurement strategy is the improved relationships with suppliers. The relationship between organisations and their suppliers is essential to achieving a successful sustainable procurement approach. The challenge for companies is how to overcome the barriers. A commitment to one of the aforementioned standards can help provide a structure to facilitate the process of embedding strategic sustainable procurement. Bidding for public sector contracts is a time-consuming process, and often an expensive one. Conversely, any private sector organisation, including small and medium enterprises that make the effort to engage property with social value requirements may gain access to significant volumes, and value, of business.
