ABSTRACT

Feedback has long been used by industry to influence behaviour in many aspects of performance. Many factories display the time since the last accident by the gate and many display ranks of bar charts covering everything from quality pass/fail rates to staff absences. Some companies who have advanced energy management system use real-time feedback. One example is a simple traffic light system to show if consumption is low, high or very high. At defence giant BAE Systems plc, an enterprising engineer developed a way to apply the stop-start technology he witnessed in his son's car to the factory production lines. A vital pre-requisite is to find out what makes the audience tick and then package the message appropriately. Sustainability must be integrated into: standard operating procedures, induction training, leaders' statements, company reports, company publications, and intranet/websites.
