ABSTRACT

The collaborators included the Environment Agency, National Farmers' Union, West Dorset District Council and Wessex Water, which is the local water company and hosted the pilot. Fiona Bowles of Wessex Water, explains why collaboration is needed in this kind of situation: Many of the water quality issues identified arise through land management as well as sewage discharges, so to resolve the beneficiaries of good water quality need to collaborate with those who can deliver the protection. Working at an international level, this is also primarily a business collaboration, working across the entire value chain of the shipping industry. But rather than focusing on influencing government policy, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative wants to test out ways of solving some of the system-level barriers to using more fuel-efficient technologies in the global shipping sector. The longest-running of our collaboration examples, the Marine Stewardship Council was modelled on the Forest Stewardship Council.
