ABSTRACT

Many companies begin their sustainability journey by looking at resource efficiency. It is easy to see, measure and achieve savings with very little financial outlay. It is also easy to see the benefit to the business and in particular to the bottom line. Carbon reduction often goes hand in hand with energy and transport efficiency. The extra steps come with climate adaptation, renewable energy and measurement. Climate adaptation is about improving business resilience to climate related risks. This could be ensuring the security of key food ingredients which may be affected by water scarcity or other impacts of climate change. Aligning and embedding sustainability into reader's product/service is one of the trickiest and most company specific parts of their sustainability programme. It is also one of the most worthwhile, and is necessary to transform reader's business into a truly sustainable business. Fairtrade is one example of businesses working positively to ensure human rights are respected in their supply chain.
