ABSTRACT

Human Resources (HR) often hold responsibility for sustainability, particularly the community and employee aspects, while operations often hold responsibility for the environmental areas. Unsurprisingly, the economic aspects are generally being well managed within companies and are generally a strong focus. A list of requirements and resources – human, financial and otherwise – that reader will need to develop and implement their sustainability programme with rough estimates of the time each person will need to dedicate to the programme. When trying to sell sustainability to their general workforce the best place to start is the altruistic side. Too much focus on the business benefits can seem cynical and can undermine the goodwill reader wish to generate. That is not to say ignore them altogether – that depends to a large extent on reader's business culture – but they should not be foremost in their communications.
