ABSTRACT

Like energy, the waste sector is subject to sustainability drivers. The waste hierarchy encourages recycling; and one way in which petroleum-based and biomass waste streams can be reused is by burning them for energy. Typical energy intensity per load mile is lower on trains or public transport and highest in aviation. When deciding between different alternatives, this should be taken into account as well as the financial cost. The combined effects of landfill tax and other constraints on the waste sector with renewable energy incentives means that many suitable waste streams have a positive financial value. Each day a member of staff works from home, he or she saves the energy, and the cost, which would have been used getting to work. Obviously one needs to ensure that productivity is not compromised.
