ABSTRACT

Boxing involves standing toe to toe with your opponent and trying to batter the living daylights out of them, before they do the same to others. Such a war of attrition will be familiar to many, if not all, sustainability practitioners. Jujitsu, however, is about using one's opponent's strength, energy and momentum against them and levering them into submission. Attitudes towards the environment and concepts such as sustainable development vary across a wide spectrum. As in any relationship, it is important to understand the other party's point of view or 'where they are coming from' to build mutual respect. The jujitsu approach requires us to understand and overcome resistance to sustainability. The author's favoured model for the art of culture change uses the analogy of an elephant guided by a human rider walking along a path and was popularised by Dan and Chip Heath.
