ABSTRACT

The first element of the elephant model of culture change is how to effectively communicate information to the rider and thus to the elephant. Under the Green Jujitsu approach one needs to think very carefully about the audience and tailor the message to appeal to them. The main problem with giving instructions is information overload. Another key Green Jujitsu tactic is to match one's language to the audience. Bold statements of fact to a cynic or sceptic can be like a red rag to a bull. Others will simply ignore statements if they think the problem is irrelevant or too difficult. Reframing arguments often involves starting discussions correctly. Feedback has long been used by industry to influence behaviour in many aspects of performance. Many factories display the time since the last accident by the gate and many display ranks of bar charts covering everything from quality pass/fail rates to staff absences.
