ABSTRACT

Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact addresses the environment, human rights, workers’ rights and anti-corruption. The Compact unites global principles

with local networks to create fluid networks. The Compact is a global multistakeholder, multi-issue network with more than 130 regional and national subnetworks. As a voluntary initiative, the Global Compact convenes all the key social actors: companies, labour, civil-society organisations and governments. At the time of writing (mid-2013), more than 10,000 companies were participating in the initiative. Participating companies are asked to communicate in their annual reports and/or other prominent public reports (e.g. sustainability reports) on progress made in implementing the the ten principles. Each signatory also files a Communication on Progress (COP) on how they are implementing the UN Global Compact.
