ABSTRACT

In June, 2011, the UN Human Rights Council endorsed the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, thereby establishing a global framework on the role of business and human rights. The Guiding Principles were developed by Professor John Ruggie and his team at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, during his six-year mandate serving as Special Representative of the UN SecretaryGeneral. Through the course of his mandate, Professor Ruggie conducted extensive consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, convening 50 international con-

sultations, involving all sectors and all continents.2 These consultations helped to build support for the Guiding Principles. In addition, all of the concepts were tested through pilot projects.
