ABSTRACT

The existence of millions of people living in grinding poverty, without access to clean water or modern energy and subject to the ravages of diseases that are relatively easily prevented or cured, is an affront to all of us. Some civil society organisations focused on the need to address poverty by increasing overseas development assistance from governments, along the lines of what developed into the 2005 Make Poverty History campaign. It is certainly true that the only sustainable way to lift people out of poverty is by developing livelihoods and economic activity. In Anglo Zimele’s 2009 Report to Society a figure is given of 17,200 jobs having been created in various Anglo enterprise development projects around the world. The almost $2 billion paid to employees in developing countries goes straight into the local economy in the form of food, housing, education and services, generating employment and local service enterprises.
