ABSTRACT
The steam engines were all called after members of the family. In spite of these early prolonged separations we remain a close family. Family life with the children was blissfully normal for the last time before, due to our travels, the children in turn went to boarding school. Hugely to the children’s credit, as a family we agreed that Shell’s work always came first— unless there was a crisis. It is very good training for starting any job anywhere, with new and as yet unconquered challenges, and gradually through application beginning to get on top of it. In 1976 we were transferred to London where he became responsible for leading the Shell exploration teams in the North Sea. Shell’s operations in Turkey consisted of relatively small oil production in eastern Turkey in the area around Diyarbakir, with its mainly Kurdish population, a joint venture refinery in Mersin, a large retail marketing business and a chemical products business.
