ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author argues that corruption is in fact an even greater distortion of markets and to date has done much more economic damage than climate change. Corruption is a pervasive evil. George’s award was an OBE with the citation for services to the fight against corruption’. The United States was a commendable early mover in legislation against corruption with the passage of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in 1977, stimulated by a number of overseas corruption scandals, including that of Lockheed military aircraft sales to various governments. Corruption comes in very many forms, and approaches to corruption are as varied as countries themselves. An organisation such as Transparency International focuses on forward-looking action, using the sins and shortcomings of the past as lessons in how corruption can be prevented in future rather than seeking ultimate justice.
