ABSTRACT

Playwright and first president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel said, "Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is easy to identify positive ways to begin to proceed toward sustainability. Changes brought about by creating a better-informed and educated consumer will move things in the direction of sustainability, but only slowly and at the margins. Sustainability advocate and former Greenpeace CEO Paul Gilding believes that some major crisis must come before any significant policy changes will be made. He sees this as a "necessary" step in coming to grips with the reality of both natural and human limits, and is hopeful that human innovative capability will be able to contend with the challenges we will then face. The late company founder Ray Anderson used to talk about climbing Mount Sustainability to explain that the company couldn't keep doing what they had been doing.
