ABSTRACT

After graduating, the author spent a year working and travelling in Canada and the United Kingdom, after which he returned to South Africa. By then, he desperately wanted to focus on alternative models of business, so he began a Master's in Business Science at the University of Cape Town. His chosen topic was 'Holistic business: a study of synergy in organisations'. Soon after arriving back in Cape Town, having completed his Master's, the author joined with futures researcher, Dr Aart Roukens de Lange, and others to set up the South African New Economics (SANE) Foundation. They described themselves loftily as 'an autonomous network to promote the creation of a humane, just, sustainable and culturally appropriate economic system in South Africa'. The SANE Foundation's newsletters reflected their passionate, albeit amateurish attempt to challenge the status quo with some articles. For his part, the author found himself warning about effects of the 'casino economy' and calling for financial market reform.
