ABSTRACT

This chapter looks briefly at some important aspects in the discussion on leadership to give an impression of the complexity and at some times confused nature of the debate. It suggests that the issue of leadership goes back to the early days of the famous philosophers and religious leaders, and that over the course of time many different theories evolved. A review of the leadership literature reveals an evolving series of "schools of thought" from "great man" and "trait" theories to "transformational" leadership. For the purpose of the journey toward sustainability, it is the concept of "authentic leadership" which clearly recognizes the need for leadership of self. The chapter focuses on who leaders are and on the difference between leadership and management. "Many universities, especially in their graduate programs of business administration, law, education, public health, and public policy, claim that their mission is to educate leaders who will advance the well-being of society in their respective fields.
