ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore some elements of the emergence of what they call SEE Change—the change to a sustainable enterprise economy—and begin thinking through some of the implications for capitalism itself. In a context of need for change, the very word 'capitalism' requires rethinking. Enterprise, risk taking, innovation and creativity, like conversation, caring and sharing, are fundamentally a part of what it means to be human: capitalism—at least in its non-radicalised form—has the best potential to tap into some of the attributes. The speculative frenzy and demand for ever-increasing share price that partially underlay the 2008 economic meltdown highlights a number of other chinks in the veneer of capitalism. Civil society is constituted of those organised entities of human civilization that are neither government nor business. Civil society is a counterpart sector to governmental and political sectors and to the economic or business sphere.
