ABSTRACT

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has developed over 13,000 standards, working with standard-setting bodies in 145 countries. The ISO 9000 and ISO14000 series are among the most well known of the ISO standards. The management systems of ISO 14001 provide a useful framework for organisations to address environmental issues. Through training, employees gain an understanding of how to prevent environmental problems. The challenge for ISO will be to find mechanisms for including greater participation of stake-holders in decision-making. ISO 14001 is very compatible with a range of standards, including those within the ISO family of standards, such as the ISO 9000 series. Once a company has developed the management systems for the ISO 14001 certificate, it becomes easier to implement SA8000 as well. ISO 14001 is well suited to large companies with well-developed management systems. ISO 14001 is also becoming more compatible with the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme of the European Union.
