ABSTRACT

Sustainability can, over time, become a central element of the screen through which employees and stakeholders think about and make decisions. When a systems perspective is taken and better integration and co-ordination result, decision-making, resource allocations and information flows will consistently support the pursuit of sustainability. Sustainability requires seeing the organisation as a whole system, not just seeing the individual parts. Many organisations spend substantial time and energy seeking to adjust the parameters of a system. When a systems perspective is taken and better integration and co-ordination result, decision-making, resource allocations and information flows will consistently support the pursuit of sustainability. The public sustainability efforts of the Dutch government, Burlington VT and others approach alignment in much the same way. Many sustainability-oriented organisations utilise the network structure at some point in their journey. Sustainability is so intertwined with these factors that it is hard to differentiate from other factors.
