ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore internal roles, responsibilities and skills in Community Involvement from two perspectives. One perspective is that of the multinational company, where managers need to look at what their business does across a number of markets. The second is that of the smaller company that is based in one country, or even one community. Part of good Community Involvement governance is the setting-up of Community Involvement steering groups within the company, at both the global and the local level. The Community Involvement function at head office is expected to oversee program direction and implementation around the world. In particular, community practitioners learn through experience that helping to integrate Corporate Responsibility and Community Involvement thinking with colleagues throughout a business requires significant time and effort – and lots of patience. Managers may want to check with their business industry body or with specialized Corporate Responsibility associations to see what learning opportunities they can recommend.
