ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that a living code is one that provides meaning to people, offers guidance for business conduct and acts as source of value creation. It is important that a code appeals to people and inspires them. Three individuals have been asked to contribute their personal experience of working with a business code. What follows are the stories of a compliance officer, employee and manager. Each manager in the company was asked to discuss the principles with his or her own people. The business code would be the umbrella for the booklets. The meetings with the steering committee were fantastic. The account of the compliance officer demonstrates how a code can be discovered as an ethical framework for an organisation within which dilemmas can be discussed and sub-codes acquire meaning. The account of the employee shows how ignoring the code could become the grounds for dismissal.
