ABSTRACT

The introduction of a business code can be a nightmare. The code can turn out to be a mockery. It can encounter significant resistance and create great upheaval. A code can be granted only a short life and turn out to be a one-day wonder, nothing more than an empty shell or window-dressing. The chapter discusses some of the worst-case scenarios that occur more regularly than one would perhaps expect. A diverse range of blunders and mishaps can occur. A false start with grievous consequences for the organisation is not inconceivable. Also on a personal level miscommunication of the code can have annoying consequences. An important lead was the organisation's code which explicitly prohibited price fixing. A code that flops often goes wrong very quickly—often in the way it is initially launched or presented. The code disappears to the bottom of the desk drawer or the bin.
