ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses several conditions that should be present in an organisation if the code is to be complied with. Management is an important source in determining which code truly applies. The manager is the walking and talking business code. Through their conduct management can reinforce or undermine the code. The code may be clear for managers and employees and leadership may set a good example, but the code can still be violated. Violations of the code can be caused by a lack of motivation and loyalty, or even resistance, anger and vengeance. In addition to awareness and commitment it is important that managers and employees are capable of upholding the code. The greater the transparency, the more visible violations and the more readily an organisation can intervene. Slave-like obedience of the code by managers and employees, extravagance and wastefulness of organisational means, information overload, interference and the relentless and ruthless enforcement of the code.
