ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses leadership requirements in relation to each element of the code star. Introducing a code involves translating it so that it acquires concrete and appropriate meaning for employees; so that it is interpreted correctly by those who have to use it. Knowledge of the content is just as important for employees as it is for managers. In order for employees to understand the code, it is important to discuss the underlying responsibilities and values. Exemplary behaviour can come across as rather robotic if it merely amounts to following the norms and rules set out in the code. Compliance with the business code must be experienced as being in the mutual interest of the organisation and employees. Dilemmas are conflicts in the code, conflicts between the code and business practice or conflicts in business practice. Each employee bears responsibility for the code. They embody the code in their conduct within and outside the organisation.
