ABSTRACT

In an increasingly global economy the ‘licence to operate’ will come under threat for companies that only ‘offshore’ without also expanding the opportunities for local staff, suppliers and managers to engage with what a corporation has to offer. The responsible corporation recognises its obligation to provide equal opportunities not only at head office, but also within its global operations. Missing from many attempts at Corporate social responsibility (CSR) yet crucial to success is a focus on community development and genuine ‘localisation’. By working in partnership with local suppliers and providing opportunities for local employees, managers and consumers, companies can empower communities and drive development. By taking a strategic perspective, offshoring can become much more than a one-off cost-cutting measure. Genuine opportunities exist for local staff to develop and grow their careers within the company. A corporate commitment to CSR is something that needs to be genuine and needs to come from the highest levels.
