ABSTRACT

Thomas Kuhn popularised the concept of 'paradigm shift' in his famous book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (Kuhn 1962). This is the SLC scale of change that we need, to address the sustainability challenges facing us today. Kuhn investigated the processes physical sciences follow when they change the way they explain the world--such as the change from a earth-centric system to a heliocentric one to explain movements of the stars. The investigation revealed two essential processes that are equally relevant to SLC. One is amassing observations that cannot be explained by the traditional explanatory framework, and which thereby undermine its legitimacy. The second process is development of a new explanatory framework that can explain the new observations.
