ABSTRACT

The Norms on the Responsibilities of Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises with Regard to Human Rights are very comprehensive, integrating human rights, labour rights, the environment, development, anti-bribery issues and consumer protection. David Weissbrodt of the United Nations Working Group on the Working Methods and Activities of Transnational Corporations played a key role in the development of the Norms. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have praised the Working Group on the Working Methods and Activities of Transnational Corporations for its transparent nature. States have the primary responsibility to promote, secure the fulfillment of, respect, ensure respect of and protect human rights recognized in international as well as national law, including ensuring that transnational corporations and other business enterprises respect human rights. Transnational corporations and other business enterprises shall provide a safe and healthy working environment as set forth in relevant international instruments and national legislation as well as international human rights and humanitarian law.
